A balanced life -
Solitude and Community
The roots of our Carmelite charism go back to the Early Hermits who
lived on Mount Carmel, near the spring of Elijah, towards the end of the
twelfth century. Inspired by these “our holy fathers of the past”, St
Teresa wanted her reformed Carmels to maintain something of their
solitary lifestyle, while developing a strong community side, so that her
spiritual daughters would be “hermits in community”. Our daily
schedule reflects this delicate balance. We still refer to our individual
room as our “cell” to remind us of the hermit cells on Mount Carmel.
