Novena Day 1:  22nd September

JOY - by St Therese

"Jesus loves people who are cheerful and ready to smile... The soul is reflected in the countenance. Like to a little child always content, your countenance should be invariably calm and serene... life is not sad, but joyous, joyous exceedingly.
It is related of some saints that they were grave even at recreation; I do not try to imitate them... I am always light-hearted and content..."

Novena Day 2:  23rd September

STRUGGLE IN PRAYER - by St Therese

"It is not necessary to read from a book beautiful prayers composed for our particular need before we can be heard... I tell God quite simply all that I want to say, and He always understands...

Whenever my soul is so dry that I am incapable of a single good thought, I always say an Our Father and a Hail Mary very slowly, and these prayers alone cheer me up and nourish my soul with divine food. It is the Gospel above all which is the source of my prayer.

FINAL PRAYER

Novena Day 3:  24th September

CONFIDENCE - by St Therese

"We can never have too much confidence in our God who is so mighty and so merciful; as we hope in Him so shall we receive...  If only everyone weak and imperfect like me felt as I do, no one would despair of reaching the heights of love, for Jesus does not ask for glorious deeds. He asks only for self-surrender and for gratitude... It is gratitude that brings us the most grace.
God will grow tired of trying me before I shall lose confidence in Him. Even if He should kill me yet will I hope in Him.

FINAL PRAYER

Novena Day 4:  25th September

FREQUENT HOLY COMMUNION - by St Therese

"Think that Jesus is there in the Tabernacle expressly for you, for you alone. He is burning with the desire to enter your heart... When the devil has succeeded in drawing the soul away from Holy Communion, he has won everything... so don't listen to the devil, mock him and go without any fear to receive Jesus in peace and love... He is your only true friend.

Don't be troubled about feeling no consolations in your Communions: this is a trial you must bear with love... Your heart is made to love Jesus, to love Him passionately; pray so that the beautiful years of your life may not pass by in fears... receive Communion often, very often..."

FINAL PRAYER

Novena Day 5:  26th September

SUFFERING - by St Therese

"I have often noticed that experience of suffering makes us kind and indulgent towards others, because it is suffering that draws us nearer to God...
Let us not believe that we can love without suffering...

If I did not suffer from one minute to the next, I should find it impossible to maintain my patience, but I do not look farther than the present moment. It is because one thinks of the past and the future that one becomes discouraged and loses hope."

FINAL PRAYER

Novena Day 6:  27th September

OUR LADY - by St Therese

"Have no fear of loving the Blessed Virgin too much, you will never love her enough, and Jesus will be pleased since the Blessed Virgin is His Mother. I have only to turn to Mary and Jesus triumphs over everything....

I must see her real life, not her imagined life. I am sure that her real life was very simple... they should present her as imitable, bringing out her virtues, saying that she lived by faith just like ourselves...

She is more Mother than Queen..."

FINAL PRAYER

Novena Day 7:  28th September

 PRAYER - by St Therese

"Prayer for me is simply a raising of the heart, a simple glance towards Heaven, an expression of love and gratitude in the midst of trial as well as in times of joy;
in a word, it is something noble and supernatural expanding my soul and uniting it to God...
I take refuge in prayer; indeed, all my strength lies in prayer and sacrifice. They are my invincible arms, and I know from experience that I can conquer hearts with these more surely than I can with words.

The power of prayer is certainly wonderful. One might liken it to a queen who always has free access to the King and can obtain everything she asks".

FINAL PRAYER

Novena Day 8:  29th September

UNDERSTANDING OTHERS - by St Therese

"When you are exasperated with someone, the way to recover your peace of mind is to pray for that person and ask God to reward her for giving you an opportunity to suffer... It is because you do not soften your heart in advance that you are easily overcome... How often one hurts without realising it!

So many are sick, others are weak, and all of them are suffering. We ought to be very gentle with them... One should always treat others charitably, for very often what one thinks is negligence is heroic in God's eyes. A sister who is suffering from migraine, or is troubled interiorly does more when she does half of what is required of her than another who does it all, but is sound in mind and body.

You must become gentle; never any harsh words, never a harsh tone; never take on a harsh look, always be gentle."

FINAL PRAYER

Novena Day 9:  30th September

HUMILITY - by St Therese

"God knows your intentions. As long as you are humble you will be happy.
Holiness is not in one exercise or another; it consists in a disposition of the heart which renders us humble and little in the hands of God, conscious of our weakness, and confident, even daringly confident, of His paternal goodness."

MY VOCATION IS LOVE - by St Therese

"Charity gave me the key to my vocation. I understood that since the Church is a body composed of different members, she could not lack the most necessary and most nobly endowed of all the bodily organs. I understood that the Church has a heart - and a heart on fire with love... I realised that love includes every vocation, that love is all things, that love is eternal, reaching down through the ages and stretching to the uttermost limits of earth...

Beside myself with joy, I cried out: "O Jesus, my Love, my vocation is found at last - my vocation is love!"
In the heart of the Church; my Mother, I will be Love!
Thus I shall be all things and my dream will be fulfilled."

Prayer to St. Thérèse

St Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face:
teach us to follow your little way
of confidence and trust.

Help us to realise that a Father's love watches over us each day of our lives, in sorrow as in joy, in trials as in peace.

Obtain for us the graces we hope for from God's infinite goodness.

St
Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face, pray for us.
